Osteopathy for Sport and Training

Whether you are a weekend warrior or a top athlete, the likelihood for you to injure yourself at some point during your sporting career is quite high.

Mostly it is linked to doing too much, too often and too soon. Inappropriate equipment and bad technique (e.g. bad footwear for running or a bad serve in tennis) also increase the chances of injuries.

When there is reduced mobility in joints and muscles there is reduced flexibility. This does not allow the perfect function of the body and so impacts on performance. Apart from affecting the quality of your play, it may lead to injuries, especially if you don’t recognise the limits of your ability.

Your osteopath is highly trained to detect such areas of reduced flexibility. This is very important in reducing the likelihood for injury significantly.

Osteopathy can help:

  • prevent injuries

  • speed up recovery post-injury

  • enhance performance

Following a full biomechanical examination, your osteopath will use safe, effective and gentle techniques like soft tissue work, inhibition, manipulation and mobilisation. The increased circulation generated through these techniques result in higher elasticity, better mobility and increased strength which ultimately lead to improved endurance and enhanced performance.

To avoid injuries

Always make sure you warm up and cool down with appropriate stretches to minimise the possibility for injury.

Drink plenty of water to keep all tissues hydrated and supple.

Listen to your body: If there are small twinges stop when possible to avoid further damage. Seek assistance as appropriate.

If you get injured

If an injury has happened whilst training or during a match, stay calm and do the following:

Rest - to reduce the impact of the injury

Ice - the area for 10 minutes every hour to reduce inflammation

Compress - the area with gentle bandages to minimise swelling

Elevate- the injured area to improve drainage

Seek proper medical assessment, including osteopathic, as soon as you can!
